From the beginning the racists are evil and stupid. Sherriff Bart is sent off by Count Basie the World famous jazz band leader. Jesse Owens was an American track star who won 4 gold medals in the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany Hitler was very upset his supermen lost to a Black man. Thank you for your reaction. Well done.

This movie is making fun of the racism and bigotry, it is not celebrating it. Movies like this are waaaaaaay too American-culture centric to be easily understood by non Americans.

Mel insulted everyone. Racists, bigots, gays, politicians, common people, smart and dumb people. Asians, Mexicans, Native Americans, Blacks, Irish, Germans and Jews. Even the white people were so intermarried that the entire town had the same last name. But he did it all in the name of comedy when people had thicker skin.

Beans contain type of sugar that requires a special enzyme to break down. Otherwise they pass undigested to the large intestines where bacteria feed on them, producing gasses that make you fart. (If you routinely eat beans, the amount of enzyme increases and this is no longer a problem, but most Americans only rarely eat beans.) In the old West, pork-and-beans was a staple of the cowboy diet. This was the first time in the history of cinema that a farting joke was seen (or heard). ---- In public school, you won't supposed to chew gum. The teacher would say it was wrong because you didn't bring enough for the whole class. ---- Adolf Hitler was trying to promote the ideal of the German race being the top of the line among Europeans, and even more so against the "inferior races" (people of color). Berlin was the site of the 1936 summer Olympics and Hitler thought this was a good way to show the superiority of his people. Instead, there was a black man, Jesse Owens (at a time when few blacks competed in sports) walked away with a number of medals, totally disproving Hitler's racist claims and personally embarrassing him. So when Bart, after being unmasked in his KKK robe, says his next trick to imitate Jesse Owens, he meant he and Jim were run like crazy.

Despite the movie being set in 1874, the trackworkers sing a popular sophisticated Cole Porter song from the 1930's. The cowboys demand they sing "Camptown Ladies," a song composted in 1850 by famed American Stephen Forster, specifically for minstrel shows. These skits were a popular part of vaudeville shows, common prior to the development of sound added to movies. These minstrel shows consisted of a half-dozen white men, in "blackface," sitting on straight-back chairs in a line across the stage. They would sing such songs, accompanied by banjos, tambourines, "bones, and "spoons." Every so often they would stop and one guy would say in a stereotypical racist accent something like "When is a door not a door?" The other would answer "I don't know, Mr." (whatever his name was). "When is a door not a door?" To which the other would answer "When it is ajar!" (In other words, silly corny jokes.) So asking the trackworkers to sing "Camptown Ladies" would be the most offensive song for People of Color to be forced to sing.

People doing a lot of movie reactions should understand an overview of the history of American movies. When sound was added to silent films (c. 1927), this was still the "Roaring Twenties," when a whole lot of Victorian conventions and morals were being broken. The Great Depression began in 1929 but really hit home in the early '30's. (It's A Wonderful Life is a great overall of the changes in American society from 1918 to 1946, besides being such an awesome movie in its own right.) The Depression acted sort of like a national hangover to the excesses of the previous decade. (Prohibition of alcohol perversely made EVERYONE want to drink. The widespread acceptance of autos made possible a loosening of moral attitudes with "petting parties" in "lovers' lane" away from prying eyes.) As an overall reaction, the Hays Code, an extremely strict set of censorship rules, were adopted to tone down what could be said and shown in movies. This was eventually replaced by the current letter code rating system in 1969. As a result of this new-found freedom sparked a decade or so overreaction in the opposite direction, leading to a slew of zany outrageous movies like Blazing Saddles, Rocky Horror, Holy Grail, Airplane!, Naked Gun. Many of these movies went wild saying and depicting things often for the first time ever. ---- The overall framework of this movie was a take-off of a 1939 western Destry Rides Again. A town overrun by villains hires a new sheriff sight unseen. At first he disappoints them as he is not the hard gunslinger they had expected but a quiet non-confrontational guy. In the end, though, he solves the problem in his own way. In the movie finale, the good village folks rally to his defense and turn out in force to fight the bad guys in a free-for-all brawl in the street. Among the Western stereotypes was the dance hall madam with a heart of gold, played by German Marlene Dietrich with her strong accent and her scantily dressed attire complete with fishnet stockings.

Great reaction! Very unique and genuine. Much appreciated. Quick tidbits: - When the old lady is getting punched, the guy holding her is eating cake - The fart scene was the first ever in cinema, and was considered so vulgar that when the made-for-tv version came out, the sounds were muted. That scene is super hilarious without it, as these guys are randomly leaning and making faces for apparently no reason! - This movie was made one year prior to Monty Python's Holy Grail. When you watch that one, notice the nods or homages to Blazing Saddles - 4th wall break, My name is....., anachronistic suppositions and such. Thanks again for the reaction!

I was very concerned in the beginning that your kindness towards other human beings would prevent you from being able to see the irony and comedic genius that this film is. However, in the end, I think you got it......racism is stupid on every level and it is ok to laugh at that stupidity.

Mel Brooks wanted to do a satire on racism and set it in present time but no studio would finance it. Warner Brothers told him he could do a satire on racism but he would have to set it in the past. The crane shot pulling out from the fight and into the Warner Brothers studio lots was Brooks way of moving the film out of the past and into the present which is where he wanted to do the film to begin with.
